Badges and unread counts
What the red numbers on the tab bar and the app icon mean.

The number on the Messages tab is the count of chats with unread messages; on the Notifications tab, unread notifications. The app icon badge is the sum of both and clears as you read. If a badge sticks, open the tab once and pull down to refresh.
