Stories sit at the top of Messages. Replies go straight into your chat with that person.

Avatars with a ring have a new story. Tap to watch; tap the right half to skip forward, the left to go back, and hold to pause. Swipe down to close.
Reply from the field at the bottom, or send a ❤️. Both arrive as a message in your chat, marked as a reply to the story.
When you open the profile of someone who has a story, you are asked whether to watch the story or view their picture.
